Candy Jarvis was fourteen. It probably wasn’t even legal for him to interview her without her parents present. And any story he heard in the presence of Mom and Dad could be radically different from what he’d hear one on one. He did need to find out why her statement was a near duplicate of Arthur’s and Eloise’s, but he’d wait until he figured out the best way to approach her for that.
Eloise Fitch, Arthur’s companion in the SUV that day, was well over the age of consent. Pudgy told him she worked at the ice cream place on Route 33, at the entrance to Hooking’s Beach. He was surprised to see the stand open already—usually it was shuttered until Memorial Day.
